Every year, we take part in The Big Pedal, the UK’s largest cycling, walking, wheeling, and scooting challenge.
For the challenge, we added together the number of journeys made by pupils, staff, and parents to school by cycling, walking, scooting, or using a wheelchair.
The uptake has blown us away, and this year, we’re really excited to announce that we’ve done better than ever! At the close of play on Friday, 30th April. we finished fifth out of the 43 schools taking part in the South West area!
To keep everyone motivated, The Golden Wheel has been awarded as a daily trophy to the class with the highest percentage of active travel to school. There’s been some really hot competition, and we’ve even seen parents who live outside of the village bringing their scooters in the boot so that their children can still participate!
As an extra bonus, we also organised a prize where we put a golden ticket on one of the pupil’s bikes or scooters every day. It’s been really exciting for the children to see if they’re the lucky one.
On Friday, to round off a fantastic event, we also asked parents and children to safely decorate their bikes, scooters, and shoes for a big push on the last day of the challenge. You can see some of the colourful creations in the gallery below.
Organiser Tamsin Daddow said: “Even though we’re still in our bubbles due to COVID-19, it has been really fun taking part in an event as a whole school. Keeping fit and active is an important part of learning, and it’s fantastic that this event has created such a buzz!”
